Labeling - classifying data

Easily classify my data with labeling

In Isogeo, 3 types of labels can be assigned to metadata records:

  • catalogs, oriented towards uses, professions and themes ;
  • iNSPIRE themes for data or services designed to comply with the European directive;
  • themes, specific to each group, for a more personalized classification;
  • descriptive keywords.

In all cases, data can be assigned one or more labels of each type, although in the case of INSPIRE, it is recommended to choose only one theme.

How to label

As the first step in the documentation cycle, you can assign 3 types of label at the touch of a button:

  1. Go to the inventory and select one or more data items;
  2. Click on Label and the widget will appear;
Label

Then you see :

  • a list of labels already assigned to the selected data, by type and alphabetical order, with the number of occurrences for the keywords ;
  • an input field allowing you to :
    • search for labels already assigned ;
    • search for keywords in all Isogeo workgroups (including yours);
  • four filter buttons :
    • View all catalogs displays all the catalogs available in your workgroup;
    • View all Inspire themes allows you to display all the directive's themes;
    • View all workgroup themes displays all themes specific to the workgroup;
    • View keywords only displays the keywords used in the selected data and the keywords corresponding to the search entered;

The common pot of keywords on Isogeo

Free keywords are taken from an open repository shared by all Isogeo platform workgroups. This ensures consistency in metadata documentation and guides editors in their choice of tags.

However, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  • you cannot create 2 keywords with different case: they are the same(ABC is equivalent to abc);
  • you can create 2 keywords that differ in their accentuation: they will both be returned by the same text search criteria, with or without accents ('àéù' is different from 'aeu');
  • if a keyword doesn't exist, you can create it from the Label button if and only if the list is not restricted by clicking on Create keyword "New keyword". The keyword is then automatically checked and can be assigned to the selected record(s).

These rules also apply to themes, the only difference being that they must first be selected or created from the Administration tab to constitute the workgroup's restricted list.

Minimum recommendation for keyword assignment

To facilitate search and discovery, we recommend assigning at least one keyword to :

  • data producer (IGN, DGFIP, CG Mayenne, etc.);
  • the producing department (DRB, DTECV, etc.);
  • the product (BD Topo; BD Ortho, BD Carto, Scan 25, Cadastre etc.) ;
  • the area concerned (France; Pays-de-la-Loire, Mayenne, Laval, etc.) ;
  • the theme corresponding to that used in the database, and in particular in data name prefixes (Pedology, Waste, Environment, River, Social, etc.);
  • sub-theme (collective sanitation, ENS, SAGE, etc.) ;
  • date for vintage data.

We recommend writing countable keywords in the plural.
